Without an early detection test, education and
awareness of ovarian cancer is crucial to help
women receive an earlier diagnosis. It is
important to know some facts about the disease,
and to be aware of the sometimes subtle
symptoms. If the following symptoms occur for
more than two weeks, please contact your
physician. Persistence of symptoms is the key -
listen to your body.
- Pelvic or abdominal pain or discomfort
- Vague but persistent gastrointestinal
upsets such as gas, nausea, and
indigestion
- Frequency and/or urgency of urination in
the absence of an infection
- Unexplained weight gain or weight loss
- Pelvic and/or abdominal swelling, bloating
and/or feeling of fullness
- Unexplained changes in bowel habits
And, it is important to know that a Pap Test
does not detect ovarian cancer.
If you or a loved one has recently been
diagnosed with ovarian cancer and would
like to connect with other survivors, there
is a Sacramento Chapter of the National
Ovarian Cancer Coalition. The women of
the chapter are able to offer support,
compassion and inspiration as you make
your journey with this disease. They can be
contacted at 916-497-1420.
